Nick White

I came across Nick White's gorgeous website, please have a look. Not only his website is worth a good long stroll, his work is great as well. The website has a lot of funny teasers and small 'corners' to hang out for a while.
His work is fun, it's witty and shows an interesting mix of techniques and media. Lots of collage, a technique I love very much. Don't forget to have a look at the video Nick made about himself Nick Dynamite.

Agustina Woodgate

I came across the above picture in a magazine by Agustina Woodgate. I was very taken with the idea of making rugs from recycled stuffed animal skins.

The bio on her website:
'Agustina Woodgate aims to create art that fosters exchanges between people rather than encounters between a viewer and object. Through these exchanges, meaning is elaborated collectively, rather than in the space of individual consumption.
Often responding to a place or situation, Woodgate makes objects, site-specific and context-based installations, performance, and collaborative event-based projects that focus on the interplay between human beings and their surrounding environment at both macro and micro levels. Site specificity is usually the point of departure for her creative process, involving research into a place and everyday relations. Her works explore and engage with multilayered surfaces and workings of the built environment and navigates the intangible and transient layers of physical and psychological space.
Combining many disciplines she pursues ongoing collaborations with creatives from various background. Agustina works inclusively and socially, finding new access points for communication to create public, intensive, and process-oriented works.'

Urformen der Kunst

Amazing work by Karl Blossfeldt (1865 - 1932), German photographer, sculptor, teacher and artist who worked in Berlin. He is best known for his close-up photographs of plants and living things.

Some 20 years ago I got to know this book when I did research for a project in Art College. The school library had a beautiful copy of it. I often went back to get inspired by the images. Until one day the library no longer had the book, someone had stolen it from the library. The book always stuck in my mind and when Taschen published a cheap edition I bought it and I bought the postcards as well. But I was never satisfied with the print quality.

So, a month ago, I decided I wanted an older edition and searched online. I found this beauty from 1953. The first edition is from 1935 but is way too expensive for me. However, it would be amazing to be able to find an original print...

Blogger for Sargasso

I have not been a very frequent blogger here lately. For several reasons actually:
- I've been extremely busy at work
- I've been drawing a lot
- I'm a guest blogger at Sargasso.nl, a Dutch blog about science, politics and culture.

Dutch readers can read my contributions:

Doel - Belgium

Last weekend I was on my way to my parents when I thought about visiting Doel, near Antwerp (Belgium). I knew about this small village 'cause this is where one of the two nuclear power plants is situated quite near to where I grew up (in Zeeland, near the border of Belgium). The past decade Doel is threatened with complete demolition due to future enlargement of the harbour of Antwerp. This made Doel into a ghost town. And well worth a visit because since the depopulation, Doel has attracted numerous street artists.

It was a gloomy day, as you can see in the pictures, and somewhat scary for the children...
