Thesis

Way back, in my final year in Art College I wrote my final thesis on subway maps and subway signage. Quite an extensive work it turned out to be: I researched the London Subway, used it as the perfect model and compared it to the smallest subways on Earth: Amsterdam and Rotterdam. I was rather ambitious, it turned into a 120-pager!
You can imagine, I did quite a lot of citytrips to the three cities.

Ghent Festivities

Before we went to Italy we were in Ghent (Belgium) for a day. I know the city rather well, I grew up just a few kilometres from the Dutch/Belgium border, so I often visited cities as Ghent or Antwerp. Each year Ghent is covered in a 10-day festival, called the Gentse Feesten, which is famous for its performances, music, great atmosphere and of course, a lot of beer.
My boyfriend/husband Corné Bastiaansen took all of these pictures, he has a great eye for weird situations and interesting layouts. Hope you enjoy them!

Visiting London

London has always been my favorite city. It's been a while since I've been there though. At least 10 years... Time to get to know London all over again! I guess this guide won't help me, London has changed drastically since 1948.

Cities with two sides

A few posts earlier I showed my travel journals. Among them was the first journal I made, about a trip to Prague, Budapest, Krakow and Berlin. For a typography assignment in Art College I used that journal as a source to make a small booklet about two cities that were 'spilt' in the middle: East and West Berlin (In 1991 the differences were still quite obvious) and Buda and Pest. I used he tickets and receipts as illustrations. I printed it the old fashioned way in the school's printshop.

Holiday journals

Trip to Prague-Budapest-Krakow-Berlin

Hitch-hiking through France

City trip to Strasbourg and Barcelona

Holiday to the south-west of Britain

Holiday to Corsica

When we were students we used to travel through Europe. We hitch-hiked a lot and hardly ever stayed longer than 2 nights in one place. During those trips I always kept a journal in which I described our days. I used the journals to collect tickets, receipts, cards, plans etc. Looking back the books are nice time capsules.
