Art in the Amsterdam metro

I commute to work: 4 days a week I take the train and the metro. The Amsterdam metro system is very small and driving it every day is not a very inspiring experience. But since some the interiors of the older trains (de Zilvermeeuw for insiders) have been decorated by several artists it's always a surprise which artist to discover next. Dutch readers can find more information here.

For a while now I've been photographing these interiors. I've been posting them on Instagram or on My365. I only just realised that it would make a great blogpost! (if you feel like following me on Instagram look for a user named Sandstraal)

I confess - the printers' tray

I hesitated to show you this because it seems so old fashioned. During the seventies old printers' drawers were used as decoration pieces. I had a replica back then too. Filled with small figurines and other stuff. When my neighbour Claire threw out these drawers I was walking past and decided to adopt them.

I use them to show off my wood block letters, small tin cans, stones and other vintage items. My children love it too! My daughter has a small one of her own. 

Cardboard drums

The other day we were at a big flea market where we noticed this guy who made these little cardboard drums for children. In no time both our children had their own drums!

Grandfather's assets

My grandfather was stationed in the UK during World War II. He kept his belongings in this wooden box. It serves as a side table in our living room now.

From grandmother to mother

This kitchen cabinet used to be my grandmother's. And now my mother uses it in her kitchen!

Graduation Show 2010 Design Academy #5

Sophie de Vocht graduated from the design department 'Man and living'

A piece of lounging furniture (Loop chair) on the cutting edge between chair and carpet, Sophie de Vocht has caught the comfort of the two and united them to become one product. She has created a hand-tufted cover out of a piece of knitting yearn measuring a staggering 300 metres, created especially by the Textielmuseum in Tilburg.

SOFA_XXXX is made of just 4 different lengths of bamboo sticks, rings and joints. the parts on their own don't seem to be special, but when put together in a regular pattern their beauty appears.
It can be contracted, which makes it easier for transportation. While contracted it can be even used as a chair.
