Aggregation - Chun Kwang Young

Korean contemporary artist Chun Kwang Young is best known for his free-standing compositions and two-dimensional low-reliefs made of small triangles of Styrofoam wrapped in printed mulberry paper, each small piece tied with twisted "threads" of the paper.

Most of the works from his "Aggregation" series have tended to be in monochromatic black-and-white or sepia and rust colors. But for his new pieces Chun has injected striking touches of color.

"When I started the Aggregation in late 1980, I wanted to express and take forward the spirit of Korean traditions using mulberry paper, which used to be indigenous to every Korean household," Then in 2004, my work started to look more like lunar landscapes and dry desert as I wanted to express my anger and criticism toward modern society and how it is destroying environment."

Workshop screen printing

Last week I did a two-day workshop screen printing at the Amsterdam Grafisch Atelier. My intension was to learn the process so that I can screen print my own illustrations in the future. The workflow is pretty technical - which I'm not - and requires quite some patience - which I have none. It was scary but in the end pretty awesome to do something out of my comfort zone. I'm very enthusiastic about it and will definitely try it again! 

I decided to use a few of my illustrations to get to know the technique a little better. I used several backgrounds, the green one is a painting I scanned and changed into black and white bitmap.

I made the red and blue background during the workshop; by tearing pieces of paper and exposing that onto the mesh.

Clement Valla - Seed drawings

Clement Valla is an artist and programmer interested in processes that produce unfamiliar artifacts and skew reality. Valla works within systems, applying a ‘programmed brain’ that pushes problem-solving logic to irrational ends. His recent work examines copies, repetition and reproduction markets – from Chinese ‘Oil-Painting Factories’ to drawings on Amazon’s Mechanical Turk. This work explores the tension between individual creativity and the influence of systems and networks on the individual.

Each Seed Drawing is an aggregate of many smaller drawings, all produced as copies of one another.

Over a 3 month period, thousands of individuals were solicited to copy small simple line drawings, through an online labor marketplace called Amazon Mechanical Turk. As each copy was completed, it in turn was replicated by other Mechanical Turk workers. Each drawing is produced by a single individual with no knowledge of the overall forms and structure within the larger drawing.
The iterative process of copying produces growth-like structures in which different patterns of influence and large-scale structures emerge. These larger drawing characteristics are purely the result of local interactions; beyond the writing of the algorithm, no single individual is making larger decisions for the group.

Tactile lettering - Dominique Falla

I stumbled upon Dominique Falla's 'We are all part of the same thing' via Bumbumbum. On her website I discovered her beautiful pieces of tactile lettering/typography. She combines digital creation with analogue output.
