Nick White

I came across Nick White's gorgeous website, please have a look. Not only his website is worth a good long stroll, his work is great as well. The website has a lot of funny teasers and small 'corners' to hang out for a while.
His work is fun, it's witty and shows an interesting mix of techniques and media. Lots of collage, a technique I love very much. Don't forget to have a look at the video Nick made about himself Nick Dynamite.

Post #995 - Mila and her friends

Our daugther Mila turned 9 a few weeks ago. For this occasion she and 6 of her friends did a workshop 'animation'. Writing a story, moulding clay characters, filming. Quite difficult for 8-year olds... but a lot of fun.

Here are the results!

Don't forget, I'll be giving away stuff when I do my 999th post! Check in again the upcoming days.

The Alphabet 2

View this wonderful stop motion animation made by N9ve. The Alphabet 2 - a horn book video experiment - is a developmental spelling video where each character visually represents the meaning of the word itself. Playing with different techniques and materials into little and big spaces, but always focusing on Helvetica font's proportions.

A while you're at it watch their first Alphabet video, where each character is the initial letter of a font name.

'Whatcha got' by Rogier Wieland

Rogier Wieland is a Dutch graphic and audiovisual designer and a true paper artist. He was one of the speakers at the Papier Hier event which I attended last Saturday. Unfortunately I didn't see his presentation. Visit his website for more awesome stopmotion animations. Don't forget to watch the making of the video 'Whatcha got'!

The Chap - Even your friend

The Chap / Even Your Friend from Lo+LOAF TV on Vimeo.

Just look at this lovely video by Lo+LOAF TV.

The Chap are an experimental pop band from London. Their music is a mix of rock and pop with small quantities of almost every other genre thrown in for good measure. They are known for their energetic live shows which often end with exploding violins and cellos.

Linde Faas

On the Animalarium blog I came across this beautiful animation by Linde Faas. While checking out her bio on her website I realised she attended the same Art College as I did. But even more surprising I found out she received the prestigious Art College award (St. Joost penning) for her animation 'According to birds'. Her animations, drawings, illustrations and even her photographs show her - somewhat gloomy - love for nature's beauty, mysteries and overwhelming power.

Raoul Deleo

One of Holland's best illustrators, in my opinion, is Raoul Deleo. His style, concepts and approach amaze me every time. He does have a signature, but he is able to work with so many different techniques, which I think makes him absolutely stand out. Take a look at his website and see his wonderful work. And don't forget to watch the commercial he did (see below); the Big Bank Theory by Alex

Let children learn

things to learn from Matt Edgar on Vimeo.

Dutch illustrator/designer Christan Borstlap was commissioned to design the children's stamps for 2009 for the Dutch TNT. This charity project focuses on the promotion of children's education. Dutch children at the age of about 10 go door to door to sell these stamps. I remember when I was at the right age to sell them. I had to run home and start my selling activities immediately, otherwise someone else would have beaten me to it. The stamps were very popular, everyone bought them! Needless to say, that was in the pre e-mail era.

For the promotion of the 2009 stamps Christian made an animation which I saw at the Berlin Pictoplasma Festival. I had never seen the stamps, nor the animation... So I was pleasantly surprised to discover that one of the animations I enjoyed most was designed by a Dutch illustrator! In fact, I was already familiar with his work. His brother Jan-Jacob used to be a colleague of mine at EdenSpiekermann. Check out his website for more great work.

Joanna Lurie

One of the best animations I saw at the pictoplasma festival was Joanna Lurie's Le silence sous l'écorce. You can watch part of the animation below, but I must say the size and the fact that it's just a part of the film doesn't do it justice. Visit her website for more screenings and for information.
