Attention, attention: Blogpost #500!!

Dear all!
This post is number 500. It took me little under a year to get to this point. My blog developed from posting my own work, to showing my collection of vintage stuff into a virtual place where I collect and show my inspiration.
The bloggers amongst you know how much work blogging is. I'm always so thrilled when someone comments or clicks the follow button. And I especially love it when someone takes the time to leave a comment. Thanks to all you regular readers and viewers!
However, sometimes I get disappointed when I realise that my blog is a bit unnoticed; Not that many followers, few comments and not a lot viewers on most days.

David Fullarton - What I do at work...

'What I do at work when I'm supposed to be working' is the title of an installation created by artist David Fullarton as his contribution to an exhibition project called Sisyphus Office, based in Houston, Texas. The artists involved in the project collaborated with businesses and offices in and around Houston throughout 2009.
Fullarton's exhibit was an installed in the offices of Houston radio station 90.1 KPFT. It consisted of a number of small, abject, text based works that were made entirely from office supplies. These were then pinned up randomly around the office workspace, appearing without warning amongst the notices, flyers and memos that were already existing in that environment as if surreptitiously placed there by a disgruntled and slightly deranged employee. The installation was later moved to Houston's Contemporary Arts Museum where it was installed in the admin offices in order to remain true to the original concept of having the art live in a working office environment.

Pairs and opposites

My former post showed typographic sketches and this post shows what I was sketching for.

This book is a co-production of all the students in the second year of our graphic design department. We were all given a letter from the alphabet and had to think up pairs and opposites in the Dutch language starting with that letter. We were each given a spread in the book and we were supposed to layout the pages with these words. Of course it had to be obvious which were the pairs and which were the opposites.

I was given the letter S and I had by far the biggest amount of pairs and opposites. That meant a lot of sketching, with a lot of words... The first two photos show my spread in the book. Our teacher designed the cover and the title page. The book was actually printed in the school's printshop.

Hassan Massoudy's calligraphy

Last time when I was in Paris I visited the Musée de l'Institut du Monde Arabe (Museum of the Institute of the Arab World) and bought this beautiful book by Jacques Salomé on the calligraphy works by the Iraqi artist Hassan Massoudy. I fell in love with his twentieth century calligraphy immediately.

Hassan Massoudy is an artist for whom the word itself remains the most sublime creative force. His creations are a subtle mix of present and past, oriental and occidental, tradition and modernity. The words and phrases, which are the inspiration for his calligraphy, are drawn from proverbs, poets and philosophers throughout the centuries, ranging from St. Augustine, Virgil and Ibne Arabi to Baudelaire and Rousseau.
