Jeu de barricade

Malefiz, also known as Barricade, is a board game, invented by Werner Schöppner and first marketed in 1959. It is a descendant of the board game Pachisi, but it lacks the former game's circular gameplay, and makes use of extra pieces to build blockades.
Don't you just love the illustrations on the box?

Two to four players begin the game with 5 pieces each, arranged at the bottom of the board. The goal is to reach the very top of the board. A roll of the dice determines how many places each piece is allowed to move. Players can block their opponents by moving 'barricade' pieces to obstruct their path.

Michel Wieggers

Dutch artist Michel Wieggers works with various materials and techniques. He works on patterns, textures, repetitions and stratification. To create dense surfaces he combines several drawing techniques such as charcoal lines placed into grids and watercolor strokes. The drawings appear to have a close affiliation with woven fabrics.

He also works with corduroy which he paints and cuts into thin strips. By painting front and backside differently the sliced corduroy allows for alternate views.

Kareltje's club

I found this wonderful book from 1955 with lovely illustrations by Leonard Roggeveen, whom I blogged about before. This book is published by a savings bank (Rijkspostspaarbank).

Wim Gijzen - 863 municipalities

In 1972 Dutch artist Wim Gijzen set imself to the task to visit and document all the 863 municipalities in the Netherlands. In each municipality he photographed himself near the city sign in panoramic view. Furthermore he bought two postcards; one of which he sent to the Rotterdam Art Foundation. He photographed the shop where he bought the postcards and the post box the mailed the postcard from.
All of this was brought together in one frame and all 863 frames were brought togeher in the exhibition.

The result is a photo collage of an enormous size. It's a beautiful registration of the Netherlands in the early seventies: the post boxes, the cars, the postage stamps, street signs, shops etc.

Seen and photographed at the Verbeke Foundation.http://www.verbekefoundation.com/verbeke-foundation-nl.html
